Welcome to The Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling at The University of Iowa. My name is John Wadsworth, Ph.D., CRC and I am Program Coordinator. If you are considering graduate study in rehabilitation and mental health counseling, The University of Iowa has much to offer you.
The Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling share a commitment to increasing thequality of life for people with disabilities and mental health disorders through the preparation of qualified professionals who are able to provide competent services to people with these problems. Our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and they have a national reputation for leadership and research in the profession. Our blended curriculum provides a diversity of clinical opportunities in the community. We have excellent library, classroom, technological, and research resources, and our small student-to-faculty ratio provides an excellent opportunity for persons wanting a quality graduate education. Between 2010 and 2013, the Gradate Program in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling has admitted an average of 13 students with between 11 and 12 students graduating each year; the program has a completion rate of 95%. Most students complete the program in 6 semesters (2 years) of full time study.  Updated costs of attendancefor in-state and out-of-state students can be found at http://grad.admissions.uiowa.edu/education-estimated-costs. The University of Iowa offers a number of competitive scholarships. Information about these scholarships can be found at http://grad.admissions.uiowa.edu/finances. In addition, the Department offers the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) scholarship on a competitive basis. The Scholarship provides tuition and living stipend for Fall and Spring semesters. Please contact the Program Coordinator for more information about this scholarship.
Following graduation, graduates have multiple employment opportunities.  100% of graduates obtained employment or entered advanced training within 6 months of graduation in the past 3 years. Graduates provide counseling services in public and private settings, provide employment services in public and private settings, and pursue Doctoral degrees.  Program graduate are eligible to take certification exams for Rehabilitation Counseling.  As graduates of a CACREP accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, they also have the necessary curricular requirements to be eligible for licensure in Iowa as Mental Health Counselors once they complete the required post-graduate supervised practice and examination requirements.  98% of students pass required comprehensive exams in their first attempt and approximately 81% of graduates pass the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Exam on the first attempt.
